Entertainment, recently put out some very
interesting material on vinyl. In this
review, we will talk about two of their
riddims: NEXT LEVEL and HIDE AND SEEK.
VARIOUS -
NEXT LEVEL RIDDIM
Take the Sleng-Teng riddim. When Jammy's
introduced it in the mid 1980's, a complete
new genre was born as the computer permantly
entered the Recording Studio's inna Yard.
Jamaican based Kalashnikov Records took Sleng-Teng's vibe, over 20 years later, and
took it to the Next Level. A wide variety of
contemporary Dancehall Artists, ranging from
Sizzla to Elephant Man, from Anthony B to
Nitty Kutchie, all voiced over it and
released them on 7".
Where Sleng-Teng was a clear mixture of Rub
a Dub and what was going to be Dancehall,
the Next Level Riddim is a mixture of
Dancehall and what is going to be...
Specially recommended is Sizzla's
contribution. It's like the riddim is
especially created for him and the message
that Bun Bad Mind carries. In his well-known
militant style, he chants down Babylon once
more.

BABYLON HIDE AND SEEK
(HIDE AND SEEK RIDDIM)
Contemporary Jamaican Reggae
can be a minimalistic Dancehall or Roots
riddim with lots of militancy, but a more
melodic and mellow form of Roots Music,
often with "real" instruments can
be part of the menu just as much.
Take the Hide and Seek Riddim. Vocalist Big
Pop rides it, chanting down Babylon for
dividing the sufferers in order to keep them
poor. The music is cool, just cool Roots.
